Relying solely the safety of your kids while they use the internet to different security softwares you have installed is a complete misinterpretation of what these softwares are all about. You must understand that computer programs designed to keep your kids from accessing certain sites aren't the solution to keep your kids safe. Because believe it or not, your kids can still visit bad sites even if your computer has all sorts of web filtering systems available. How? It is important therefore that you get personally involved with the activity of your kids online. 1. Educate yourself.

Knowing what you are doing ensures that you get the things you want to achieve. This also goes when it comes to the safety of your kids on the internet. 3. Remind

Sometimes, it isn't enough to teach your kids what they should do and what they shouldn't in one sitting. You need to keep on reminding them about it all the time. The effective way to do it though isn't through constant verbal approach but through the paper. Make a list of the things that your kids should and shouldn't do while using the internet. This will stand as the rules. Post it near the computer where they can easily see it.

How To Hook Up A Wireless Access Point

On a daily basis I get questions about setting up a basic wifi access point to cover a certain area of ground. This is normally outdoor and many many times these simple installations are in a RV park, marina or camp ground so I figured I would share the wealth. A typical one access point installation has a few key components and some optional ones.

Key Components:

* The wireless access point or base station (if you couldn't guess)
* POE Injector
* Omnidirectional antenna
* Cabling (RF for the antenna and CAT5 for the POE and network)

Optional

* Lightning arrestors. These are recommended but the system will work without them. You would need one lightning arrestor for the RF side (antenna side) and for the network side of the access point.


Here is what your set up would look like:

You will notice that I did not specify any gains on the antenna as every installation is different but in the 2.4 GHz range I find that the 9 dbi omni antenna with 7 degrees on downtilt works great.

OK so I know your next question. How much area will this cover??? Well in the world of wi-fi the two most used words are "It Depends". You'll hate to hear them but you better get used to them as there is never a clear answer. RF signal propagation depends on many factors such as interference, environment, line of site and the most overlooked factor CLIENT TYPE!

Most people understand interference and line of sight but if not you can feel free to read more about it in our growing wireless FAQ, here. However, the one most people do not understand and sometime refuse to understand is that client type can make or break your wireless network. How so? Well...lets take an RV park for instance.

An RV park wants to set up a simple access point in the middle of the grounds to serve its 70 RV users. The client then spends time reviewing access point specs, finds a perfect bridge with a great mix of price and performance. Buys the highest gain antenna he can find and makes sure that there is no excessive loss in the RF cabling. The items arrive via UPS, he sets them up perfectly, similar to the setup shown above and starts walking around with his laptop running netstumbler BUT, he is only going a 3rd of the distance he was expecting. This can't be right he thinks and starts troubleshooting his new hardware. However, what he doesn't realize is that it has nothing to do with the new access point set up he purchased and everything to do with the low powered wifi card in his laptop.

Communication should always be looked at as a 2 way street. The base station (access point) can be uber powerful and transmit for miles but if the device receiving the signal a mile away can only transmits 300ft the base station will never hear the interesting things the client is saying and communication breaks down. I tried to illustrate this concept and hopefully succeeded but let me know if I blew it.

Bottom line is know your wireless application and build accordingly. Do not focus on one part of your wireless access point alone as you will never get the results you are after. Look at your wireless network as a system of components working together to create cohesive communication.

Frequency Fundamentals of Wireless Networks

Wireless networks can be divided into two broad segments: short-range and long-range. Short-range wireless pertains to networks that are confined to a limited area. This applies to local area networks (LANs), such as corporate buildings, school campuses, manufacturing plants or homes, as well as to personal area networks (PANs) where portable computers within close proximity to one another need to communicate. These networks typically operate over unlicensed spectrum reserved for industrial, scientific, medical (ISM) usage. The available frequencies differ from country to country. The most common frequency band is at 2.4 GHz, which is available across most of the globe. Other bands at 5 GHz and 40 GHz are also often used. The availability of these frequencies allows users to operate wireless networks without obtaining a license, and without charge.

Long-range networks continue where LANs end. Connectivity is typically provided by companies that sell the wireless connectivity as a service. These networks span large areas such as a metropolitan area, a state or province, or an entire country. The goal of long-range networks is to provide wireless coverage globally. The most common longrange network is wireless wide area network (WWAN). When true global coverage is required, satellite networks are also available.

Many of the wireless technologies in the WPAN, WLAN, and WWAN categories transmit information using radio waves. For this to take place, the data is superimposed onto the radio wave, which is also known as the carrier wave, since it carries the data. This process is called modulation. There are many modulation techniques available, all with certain advantages and disadvantages in terms of efficiency and power requirements. The modulation techniques are as follows:

1. Narrowband technology - Narrowband radio systems transmit and receive data on a specific radio frequency. The frequency band is kept as narrow as possible to allow the information to be passed. Interference is avoided by coordinating different users on different frequencies. The radio receiver filters out all signals except those on the designated frequency. For a company to use narrowband technology, it requires a license issued by the government. Examples of such companies include many of the wide area network providers.

2. Spread spectrum - By design, spread spectrum trades off bandwidth efficiency for reliability, integrity, and security. It consumes more bandwidth than narrow-band technology, but produces a signal that is louder and easier to detect by receivers that know the parameters of the signal being broadcast. To everyone else, the spread-spectrum signal looks like background noise. Two variations of spread-spectrum radio exist: frequency-hopping and direct-sequence.

a). Frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) - FHSS uses a narrowband carrier that rapidly cycles through frequencies. Both the sender and receiver know the frequency pattern being used. The idea is that even if one frequency is blocked, another should be available. If this is not the case, then the data is re-sent. When properly synchronized, the result is a single logical channel over which the information is transmitted. To everyone else, it appears as short bursts of noise. The maximum data rate using FHSS is typically around 1 Mbps.
